A Hotel Manager’s Guide to Choosing the Perfect Duvet
Your choice of bedding says a lot about your hotel and the guest experience you want to provide. Hotel duvets should not only be chosen with guest sleep quality in mind, but they should also match your offering and price point. If your guests are paying a premium price, they’ll expect a premium product and luxury hotel bedding.
While hotel duvets form just one part of your unique guest experience, their importance should not be underestimated. In this blog, we cover all the need-to-know information for choosing the right hotel duvets for your business - decoding filling options, materials, togs, sizings and much more.
Hotel duvet materials and fillings
When choosing the right hotel duvets for your guests, it’s important to consider cover material and the fill itself:
Duvet fill
We categorise duvet fillings into three different types:
Luxurious
Premium hotel duvets are usually made with ‘natural’ fillings like feather and down and sit at the higher end of the pricing scale. Our Belvedere Duvet is a favourite among luxury establishments, with its 85% duck feather, 15% down combination providing a light, breathable and beautifully sumptuous feel.
Hypoallergenic hotel duvets
Duvets with synthetic fills are affordable all-rounders. Feathers and down aren’t for everyone - vegans and allergy sufferers being just a couple of examples - whereas synthetic, hypoallergenic materials are a safe bet for almost every guest.
They’ve long been a popular choice for budget and mid-range hotels, but as technologies develop, they’re giving luxury options a run for their money too. Our Brooklands duvet is a popular down alternative with siliconised fibres for a sumptuous soft and luxurious finish. We also have the Claremont Micro Down Duvet which offers a synthetic alternative to down with a similar feel.
Eco-friendly
With many hospitality businesses making a concerted effort to drive down their carbon footprints, eco-friendly products are seeing greater demand. Hotel quality duvets are no exception.
Our Ashton duvet, made from 100% PET plastic bottles, has become a go-to for climate conscious hoteliers that don’t want to compromise on comfort. Meanwhile, our new Clevedon duvet combines sustainability and a high-end feel, using recycled plastic to achieve a luxurious, lofty fill.
Duvet cover materials
Hotel sheets and duvet covers are two separate things. Here we’re referring to the cover that encases the duvet filling - not to be confused with the bed linen that sits on top!
While guests are unlikely to notice the hotel duvet covers, with them being covered by linen, choosing the right material is still important for comfort and experience. If you’ve opted for hotel quality duvet covers with a feather filling, for example, you’ll need cotton covers to stop the material poking through.
Our duvet covers are:
-
Cotton - Providing breathability and a luxurious finish. For high thread count duvet covers, look no further than our T230 and cambric cotton-covered duvets.
-
Microfibre - The perfect complement to soft hotel duvets, providing a cool, smooth outer and a bright white finish.
-
Polycotton - Wonderfully long-lasting and low-maintenance. Our polycotton covers are wrinkle-resistant and machine washable.
Tog ratings
A duvet’s tog is essentially its warmth rating. 10.5 tog is the hospitality industry standard for year-round comfort, and this can be paired with soft throws so guests can add extra layers for warmth and comfort in the colder months. We produce a range of cosy hotel blankets and hotel bedroom essentials to help make bedding adaptable and add a splash of colour to the room.
Some hotels may prefer to rotate duvets seasonally to adapt with the weather and reduce wear, opting for 4.5 tog duvets in summer and 12 to 13.5 tog in the colder winter months.
Duvet size and fit
All our hotel duvet covers come in UK sizings, available in single, double, king size and super king.
These are:
Single | 135 x 200cm |
Double | 200 x 200cm |
King | 225 x 220cm |
Super king | 260 x 220cm |
Care and maintenance for hotel style duvets
When choosing hotel style duvet covers, pay attention to the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions to ensure you’ll be able to care for them properly. This is essential to prolong hotel duvet quality and lifespan, and get the most from your investment.
Our top tips:
-
Clean according to the label. While some microfibre and hollowfibre duvets can be machine washed on-premise, feather and down duvets are typically dry clean only.
-
Ask housekeepers to give hotel bedroom duvets a good shake during daily room service to maintain even fill distribution.
-
Invest in good quality protective covers on all bedding to keep it looking fresh and extend its lifespan.
