How to Choose the Right Hotel Duvet: King Size Guide

Hotel bedding is not only an important indicator of quality, comfort and cleanliness, but it’s also intrinsically linked to sleep quality. And, with trends like sleep tourism on the rise, hospitality teams cannot afford to overlook its importance.

Yet, choosing the right king size duvets for your hotel can seem like a daunting task, particularly when preferences vary from guest to guest. To help you make the right investment for your business and your customers, we’ve compiled our top tips and key considerations in this guide.

King size duvet dimensions and sizing

A step up from the standard double, king size beds are slightly longer and wider, providing extra room and luxury for guests. A hotel king duvet in the UK is typically 220cm in length and 225cm in width.

Sizing up again will take you to a hotel super king duvet, which usually measures 220cm in length and 260cm in width.

Duvets decoded: Key terminology and considerations

You’re likely to come across different jargon, design features, materials and measurements when shopping for the perfect hotel king size duvet. We’ve broken down the important considerations here to help you navigate the different options.

Fill types - Down vs synthetic hotel duvet

Filling for duvets typically falls into two different categories - natural and synthetic.

Natural fillings refer to animal-derived materials like feathers, down and wool. These options usually come at a higher price point than their synthetic counterparts and are more commonly associated with the luxury market. Natural fillings give a sumptuous, plush feel to the duvet and provide breathable, moisture-wicking, luxury hotel bedding.

Synthetic materials are manmade, such as polyester or microfibre, and are typically easy to care for and more budget-friendly. However, a cheaper price point doesn’t always equal a compromise on quality. At Star Linen, our microfibre and hollowfibre filled duvets offer a light, breathable, luxurious feel.

We also proudly offer eco-friendly luxury with our Ashton and Clevedon ranges which use recycled 100% PET plastic bottles to create a soft, smooth and hypoallergenic fill. Shop our eco-friendly king size duvets here.

Hotel king duvet cover materials

In addition to the duvet filling, you also need to consider the cover material. A hotel king size duvet cover in soft cotton is a luxurious touch to any guest room, providing a smooth and cool surface that’s breathable and moisture-wicking.

Other hotel duvet cover king size options include:

  • Microfibre - Smooth, soft and durable, our microfibre covers are cool to touch and provide a bright white finish - the perfect complement to a clean and cosy guestroom.

  • Polycotton - Machine washable and wrinkle resistant, our polycotton products are durable, cost-effective and easy to care for.

Togs

The tog rating measures how warm a duvet is - the higher the tog, the warmer the duvet. A typical hotel quality king size duvet in the UK is 10.5 tog as it’s a good all-rounder for all seasons, but some offer a more lightweight option in the summer months, and a warmer duvet through the winter.

We stock our Hilltop duvet in 4.5 tog as well as 12 and 13.5 tog, so hoteliers can provide beautifully soft bedding to suit the changing seasons. However, budget conscious or space-poor businesses may prefer to stick to the standard 10.5 tog and provide optional layers and blankets.

Thread count

Thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of the material, including horizontal and vertical threads.

A king or super king duvet of hotel quality will usually have a thread count of  between 130 to 400. At the lower end of the range sits lighter, more breathable options, while warmer options are usually at the higher end of the scale.

Our tips - What to consider when buying king size hotel duvets

  • Alternative options - Preferences naturally vary from guest to guest, so it might be worth keeping a couple of different duvets in storage so you can accommodate their needs. If your go-to is a luxurious duvet with a natural fill, you may also wish to invest in a quality hypoallergenic hotel duvet so you can cater for vegan guests or those with allergies.

  • Hotel bedding durability and quality - Investing in quality means your duvets should stay looking better for longer, resulting in fewer replacements and less cost overtime.

  • Sustainability - If your hotel has sustainable commitments, eco-friendly bedding choices can help reduce environmental impact. Consider duvets made from recycled materials, like our Ashton or Clevedon ranges, and explore bedding recycling options to limit contribution to landfill.

  • Care and maintenance - Ensure you can carry out the recommended steps to prolong the lifespan of your duvets. Investing in quality duvet protectors will help prevent staining, but when you do need to clean duvets, check the manufacturer instructions. It’s likely natural fillings will be dry clean or spot clean only.
