Thread Counts in Hotel Duvet Covers: What’s Worth Paying For
What is thread count?
Thread count is a measurement of how many vertical and horizontal threads can be counted per square inch of material, showing how tightly woven a fabric is. So, a sheet with a 400 thread count contains 200 warp (vertical) threads and 200 weft (horizontal) threads in each square inch.
Thread count is often used as an indicator of a fabric’s quality, durability, and softness. In general, a higher thread count suggests a more luxurious feel, although the type of yarn and the quality of the weave also play an important role.

Does higher thread count always mean better quality?
While luxury bedding often starts around a 300 thread count, there are a few other factors to consider. As the quality of the fabric determines the fineness of a sheet, as does the weaving technique. So, a low quality fabric with a high thread count may not feel as luxurious as you might think. Bed linen made from low-grade yarn can have a high thread count but still feel stiff and heavy.
On the other hand, high-quality fibers, such as those used in Egyptian cotton bedding, can achieve thread counts up to 1000 while being breathable, durable, and super soft. So, thread count matters, but so does the quality of the material, and method used to make it.

What is a good thread count for bedding?
The best thread count completely depends on the purpose of the bed linen and the individual user, as everyone’s preference is different. Thread count affects the weight and temperature of bedding. Lower thread counts (around 200–300) tend to be lighter, more breathable, and better for warm climates.
Very high thread counts (800 and above) aren’t always more comfortable. Manufacturers sometimes use thinner, multi-ply yarns to achieve these numbers, which can make the fabric heavier, less breathable, and more prone to pilling.
In many cases, a balanced, high-quality fabric with a moderate thread count feels far better than an ultra-high thread count sheet.

What thread count do hotels use?
That signature hotel bedding feeling is something most of us look forward to, and is often very different from what we have at home. Soft, smooth, high-quality sheets that you can sink into play a major role in creating a luxurious hotel experience. When guests sleep well, their satisfaction, loyalty, and overall perception of the hotel’s quality increase.
Many hotels choose lightweight, cotton bed linen because it’s naturally breathable, helping to create a cool and comfortable sleeping environment. Cotton is also strong and durable, making it ideal for the frequent, high-temperature washing required in hospitality. Polycotton is another popular choice as it’s soft, cost-effective, and maintains its shape and colour after many washes.

As hotel bedding is washed frequently, it must be designed to withstand high temperatures. A higher thread count with a tighter, denser weave that’s more resistant to wear and tear, may be best for longevity. But, there’s a fine balance between practicality and comfort, and we find that a count between 200-400 is usually the most suitable.
Hotel duvet covers usually fall between a 130 and 400 thread count. In fact, many leading hotel chains favour 200 thread count cotton because it strikes the ideal balance between a luxurious feel and long-term performance.
